WHEELCHAIR BOUND FIGHTERS TO COMPETE IN THE CAGE

AS GREAT Britain’s Paralympic stars celebrate their stunning medal success another set of wheelchair-bound athletes are in training for a battle royale of a different kind. For the first time ever, disabled fighters will be fighting in the cage at a top Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event in the UK. The Wheeled Warriors group and the Ultimate Cage Fighting Championships have joined forces to put on a series of bouts with fighters in wheelchairs and also amputees under MMA rules. It will take place later this year in South Yorkshire. Colin Woods, head of Wheeled Warriors, of Rugby, Warwickshire, said: “I have the pleasure to announce that after much discussion wheeled warriors and the UCFC have agreed to join forces. This is for the benefit of both the fans and physically-challenged fighters across the globe. “We have come together to bring both amputees and wheeled fighters into the ring to compete just like any other.” The fighters will compete on specially made wheelchairs that have multi use. They can be used as a sports wheelchair or an everyday chair. The wheelchair can have accessories added so it can be used for other sports such as basketball, football or even as an off-road vehicle for activities such as mountain-biking. Not only can the chairs – designed by Sportechdsc – be used for both MMA and boxing. Wheeled Warriors is the brainchild of Colin Wood who is determined that disabled people enjoy the chance to fight in MMA and boxing alongside able-bodied sportsmen and women. His dream is to see both MMA and boxing accepted into the Paralympics. Wheeled Warriors is now in the United States, Hungry, Brazil, Canada, Australia South Africa and many other nations on the continent. It will be setting up wings in many more countries in the near future. Wheeled Warriors already have fighters lined up for the show which is run by Carl Messen. Col said: “I had the pleasure to attend as a ringside spectator to the UCFC’s most recent endeavour – UCFC 4 – which had 13 bouts of amateur and pro MMA action on the card and featured special guests from the UFC Ryan Badar and Clarence Dollaway. “It is clear this concept is well-received and ahead of its time as very few would expect something of its kind to come to fruition so soon. “To conclude, this is a great collaboration which surely will improve sports and will continue to grow for the foreseeable future. Both sides are gaining opportunities.” Wheeled Warriors are currently looking for sponsors for their fighters.

NEW CLIENTS – ALLIED LEGION SECURITY

SERVICE personnel being savaged by the defence cuts are being called up by a security company.

Allied Legion Service’s wants service personnel thrown on the dole by the Ministry of Defence to flock to its banner and a new career.

David Weild, director of Allied Legion Services, said: “The cuts by the MoD are seeing thousands of highly skilled people looking for new jobs. These highly experienced former servicemen and women are exactly what we are looking for to help us grow our business. They are disciplined, work hard and know what duty really means.

“Not only does Allied Legion gain from their skills, it allows us to help those who have sacrificed years of their lives serving the nation by giving them a second career. Many of those scrapped under the defence review are now struggling and we want to help while gaining from these skills.

“But we are also looking for police officers who have lost their jobs because of the cuts to numbers.”

Allied Legion offers a range of different services for clients ranging from gate and uniformed security for warehouse, factory and industrial estate protection, trained staff for a unit for the criminally insane as well as officers for private housing estates.

It is now expanding its operations over this year and wants to recruit as many former service personnel and police officers as it can to fulfil many different roles.

These include gatehouse security, mobile patrols, alarm and key-holding and boarding up.

The company is also looking for employees for car park attending as well as cleaners and maintenance. There will be on the job training given to all new recruits as well as opportunities to take NVQs and other exams.

Allied value former armed forces because of their vigilance skills, reliability, and maturity, and because they already have authority stamped all over them.

The company is based in the North East but also has centres across the north of England, which is one of the biggest recruiting grounds for the military. Although it is looking for former servicemen and women it is also seeking experienced people from the general population.

David added: “I have always had the highest respect for the military. Many of them are now facing real hardship having been made redundant through no fault of their own. We want to help them get back into civil society and support their families, be a place where they can utilise their skills and be appreciated for their experience.”
